I just have to get this off my chest. Last night I saw a couple of folks on Facebook who had "liked" the group DEAR LORD, THIS YEAR YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTOR, [BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.] MY FAVORITE PRESIDENT IS BARACK OBAMA. AMEN. This is one of the dumbest things I've seen in the last few days on FB and frankly it burns me up that it even exists. Anyone who clicked "Like" on it is only succeeding in making themselves look like jerks. Seriously, this is about the same level of class as junior high kids talking smack at recess. The only people who laugh at this stuff are... you guessed it, other jerks. And I know you people, you aren't really jerks. (Well, most of you anyway. *smirk*) But you look like jerks in this instance. This isn't about my support of the Pres. You could substitute any names you wanted in there and the joke would be just as bad.
Now before you go off feeling mad and hurt that I called some of you a mean name, please bear with me for a minute because I think there is another point I'm going to make that you can agree with.
You see, there is now a counter group called, "Petition to remove facebook group praying for President Obama's death."
You would think, given my dislike of the first group, I would be all for this one, right? Wrong. This second group basically amounts to attempted censorship in my opinion. The folks in the "Dear Lord" group have the First Amendment right to say, pretty much whatever they please. Even obvious hate groups like the WBC (no I'm not trying to compare the two groups here!) have the right to say what they want in public. So long as they aren't making a real call to attempt to kill Obama (and no, calling for praying for his death doesn't count) or trying to incite some other kind of violence, they are protected by the First Amendment.
Sometimes, being a good American means giving people who's opinions you can't agree with the right to voice that opinion anyway.
If you want to oppose the "Dear Lord" group, why not make a group that details why they are wrong? "Dear Lord, Please help the people praying for Obama's death to see they are a bunch of meanies. Amen." or how about "Dear Flying Spaghetti Monster, please drizzle your Marinara of Peace on their Fettuccine of Anger. Ramen." Where are those groups?
As for the folks who are so pissed off at Obama and seemingly want him dead, let me ask you this... What has he done that is sooo bad? I hear cries of "Socialism!" and "He's the Anti-Christ!" The extremism in this country has grown to an alarming rate lately and I just don't get it. Did wanting the health care bill to be passed really deserve this level of rhetoric? Are people just incapable of being civilized anymore? To quote the Gym Teacher on Beavis and Butthead, "WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR MALFUNCTION?"
